Friendly Forces Updates

Literally us
Kill Us Now
I won’t sugarcoat it—writing a weekly newsletter may be the single hardest thing a human can do. Are we heroes? I really can’t say, but yes.
Friendly Forces continues to take on more work. We’re super passionate about it and get great enjoyment from helping companies understand Reservists and how to better support them, but because we work regular, full time jobs and have other family and military responsibilities, our output suffers. This pains me.
With that said, we are still looking for an intern. Not just any intern, but that special kind of intern who works for a letter of recommendation and a potential future paying job. Some people call that the “x” factor, and it is indefinable. We know you’re out there…somewhere…
We are also in talks to set up some pretty awesome partnerships with great orgs that help get military and veterans hired. More to come on that.
And, as always, we want to get more companies added to the Friendlies List to best service the Reservist community.
Good or bad, reach out and let us know your company’s policy. If it’s good—we want to add them to our list. If it’s bad, we want to partner and help them—and you.
Reach out to [email protected] to submit.

Feels good, man.
Massive W for Reservist Federal Employees
Our friend and expert USERRA attorney Brian Lawler of Pilot Law Group recently argued before the Supreme Court (ever heard of it?) and won! He argued that federal civilian employees are entitled to their full salaries while on military leave during a national emergency, regardless of whether their duty is directly related to that emergency.
The court revived claims by air traffic controller Nick Feliciano that the Federal Aviation Administration should have given him his full pay during a two-year period more than a decade ago when he was serving as a Coast Guard reservist.
Federal law requires that federal employees be paid the difference between their military and civilian salaries — known as differential pay — when they are called to service "during a national emergency."
The court said that phrase by its plain meaning applies to someone like Feliciano, who served during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but was not directly involved in those conflicts.
A federal civil service board and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, opens new tab said that because Feliciano's duty had no direct connection to a national emergency, he was not serving "during" a national emergency and was not owed differential pay.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday reversed. Gorsuch said that Congress did not establish any way to determine whether reservists' duty is related to a national emergency, suggesting that it does not affect whether they are eligible for differential pay.
We chatted with Brian about the case and other common USERRA questions a couple of months ago on the PART TIME Hitter Podcast.

Free Chicken - Checking Your Retirement Points
If you’re like me and you generally have no idea how many military retirement points you’ve accrued and the yearly points statement that magically appears in your IPERMS always seems off, you can check your points on IPPS-A.
Maybe I’m an idiot, but I just learned this. Click here to see. I believe it gets updated every pay period.
